Civilopedia entry[]

What is a king without followers? What is the value of authority if no one is present to recognize it? And what is death but the dismantling of one's glory? The terracotta soldiers buried with their ancient Chinese leaders are a testament to the human desire to cling to some degree of command even when facing the inevitability of death.

Qin Shi Huang is the imperial name of the warlord of Qin, one of the states that protected the Zhou Emperor – until it didn’t. Qin Shi Huang overthrew Zhou, proving that all the ritual trappings in the world were no match for a society organized around militarism. Before his death around 210 BCE, Qin Shi Huang commissioned the assembly of an army of clay, for the conquests he would undertake in the spirit world. Nearly 10,000 in number, the soldiers were assembled with lifelike faces, armor, and weapons, including chariots, terracotta horses, and support staff. They were buried along with Qin Shi Huang.

Trivia[]

  • The Terracotta Army's wonder quote is the first line of the poem Facing Snow, by Tang dynasty poet and politician Du Fu, which speaks of his grief at the death brought by the violent An Lushan rebellion.
