Civilopedia entry[]

What is the nature of the soul? What is the relationship between the mundane and the sacred? Questions such as these have formed the basis of theological inquiry across many religions. Christianity finds rationalistic arguments for God and how to reach divine revelation in the writings of Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, and others – arguments over whether works or faith should take priority, or how to reconcile an omniscient, omnipotent creator with the fact that some individuals are damned. In Muslim thought, a key schism revolves around the proper interpretation of divine law as revealed in the Quran. In Hinduism and Buddhism, theological questions (though the latter does not have a theos, or god) probe the nature of the soul (or atman). The two religions differ on this point. Hinduism posits the persistence of the soul in every living thing. Buddhism takes the opposite tack; there is no essence, all being is dependent. Regardless, each religion has a dedicated group of people whose role in society is to study the interplay between the divine and mundane and to understand our role in a greater cosmic sphere, which transcends our earthly existence (or, for Buddhists, non-existence).
