Civilopedia entry[]

The destruction of the mythical island Atlantis features prominently in Plato’s Timaeus, a story about the hubris of a powerful empire that took on a Greek state organized around an ideal republic. Plato’s story doesn’t need to be based on real history to be effective; he was so devoted to arguments about ideal, theoretical societies that the very concept of an idealized state has been termed “platonic.” Still, some have asserted that his story about Atlantis is an account of Thera, the volcano that, in one night, destroyed a city.

The island of Thera was home to a community of Minoans, but the volcano erupted and erased their presence. This happened over a thousand years before Plato. In Athens's heyday, Thera was a port city that was integrated into Greek culture, and later Roman polities. Now called Santorini, it is one of the most iconic Greek islands, with white-walled, blue-topped structures, and is at home on many tourists’ social media profiles.
