We have learned from the press coverage that in Civilization VI cities can and will span multiple tiles. The extra tiles are called Districts. There are different types of districts, like a science district, a military district, etc, and they get different bonuses based on the type of the their tile. It was hinted in some article that a science district might benefit from hills, because it's better to observe the skies from a high place, etc.
What we don't know is how you actually create new districts, or how you expand your cities to new tiles. Also, are there "neutral" districts? And what about Wonders? From the screenshots you might deduce that each wonder could even take up its own tile.
I imagine the different district types are unlocked by building certain types of buildings. You'd then place that district on the map the same way you place the Beacon in Beyond Earth. It could also be that you get to expand the city when certain population milestones are reached, and maybe you only assign the district type afterwards. What do you think? :)
