We may think of tin – a brittle, bright elemental metal – as a relatively flimsy material, but when combined with copper, tin produces bronze, one of the most important metals of the ancient world. Ancient smelters may have discovered tin alloys by accident when making copper tools, but once they understood that adding tin oxide into the mix could make harder, sharper, more durable tools and weapons, the Bronze Age had begun. But relying upon two different sources runs a risk should one of these fall to an enemy, and securing sources of tin was a vital part of ancient realpolitik.
