Civilopedia entry[]

In Ancient Egypt, the tjaty, or viziers, were second in power only to the pharaohs. The tjaty carried out the throne’s duties, managing the day-to-day administration of the kingdom. Their responsibilities ranged widely from agriculture and infrastructure to legal process and financial management. They were also tasked with overseeing religious rituals and appointing high-level military officers. As a result, they had to be educated and literate and were carefully chosen for their wide-ranging knowledge and abilities. Tjaty were required to be fair and honest, with utmost respect for the law and complete control over their emotions. They were expected to carry out their duties fairly, guided by reason alone. Tjaty wore an amulet of Ma’at, goddess of truth and harmony, as a reminder of the divine order sought by the pharaoh, which they were assigned to protect.
