Sid Meier does not want you to smoke. But tobacco was once an influential commodity, currency, and medicine that spanned the world. Originally domesticated in North America, tobacco found various uses as it began to travel. For the Aztecs, it was a ritual incense, and played a role in the religious connections with the divine; the snake goddess and guardian of fallen warriors, Cihuacoahuatl, had a body made of the herb. Tobacco was an early international export, making inroads into a number of societies. In the Middle East, hookahs helped cut the harshness of smoke, and the pipe was ubiquitous in Europe at various levels of society.
It was not until the late 20th century that the dangers of tobacco were made clear, and its use has dropped precipitously in many places.
