How do you use Tomb of Askia? |
Civilopedia entry[]
The greatest of the Songhai Emperors, Askia Mohammad I, lies under a monumental pyramid-like structure in present-day Mali. The tomb is a 17 meter tall mudbrick and adobe plaster building held in place by wooden beams that jut from its sides, giving it a porcupine appearance. The tomb is an early example of a style that would come to define Sahel architecture from the period. Significantly, all of the materials that went into Askia’s tomb were imported from Mecca. There is no economic reason for this, but it befits the monument as a religious and political place.
Askia Mohammad (r. 1493-1528), also known as Mamar Kassey, created the largest empire in West African history, conquering the Hausa states (of Amina’s fame) and dominating the Western Saharan trade routes. Songhai's expansion was also its downfall, as Arab states and their guns seized the less-equipped Songhai a few decades after Askia’s death.
Trivia[]
- The Tomb of Askia's wonder quote is the 78th āyat (verse) of An-Nisa, the fourth surah (chapter) of the Qur’ān, the foremost holy text of Islam.
