Civilopedia entry[]
Like crocodile teeth, the unearthly peaks of the Torres del Paine jut up from the very southern tip of the Andes. They rise over eight thousand feet and are surrounded by a subpolar ecology and cutting winds, contributing to the alien feel of the landscape. The peaks' name is a mixture of indigenous and Spanish terms, with the former including the Tehuelche, Selk’nam, Yaghan, and Kawésqar people, though locals would have shunned the inhospitable peaks. Torres del Paine was established as a national park by Chile in 1959 and remains a popular tourist attraction on account of its unearthly beauty.
Trivia[]
- Torres Del Paine's wonder quote comes from Mont Blanc: Lines Written in the Vale of Chamouni, an ode by English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
