Trade involves moving expensive goods through sometimes lawless or trackless expanses, and often across long distances while at risk. Indeed, the acceptance of this risk is part of what made trade goods desirable – things obtained through hardship could be marked up. Overland trade routes were especially important in the Muslim world, which lay at the center of global trade for most of the Middle Ages; the name “caravan” is Arabic in origin and refers to a large group of merchants, especially with an armed guard. The most influential overland trade routes stretched from West Africa to Baghdad and onwards across the Silk Road to China. These routes brought Chinese silks and pottery westward, African and European gold eastward, and enriched those empires in the middle.
