Trade by sea has taken place since humans learned to steer a ship. In Southeast Asia, the “Jade Road” linked the Philippines with indigenous groups in Taiwan. The Kula Ring in the South Pacific became famous as a means through which power and prestige were exchanged. And the Swahili dhow fleets plied the western Indian Ocean. Seabourne routes became increasingly important with the development of vessels capable of securely (most of the time) crossing the ocean: the carrack and the caravel. By the 1600s, Spanish galleons were taking Mexican gold to the Philippines in exchange for Chinese finished goods and then returning to Spain in a vast trade network that spanned the globe.
