Civilopedia entry[]
The trebuchet was the ultimate pre-gunpowder siege weapon, a massive arm with a sling on one end and a counterweight on the other. When the weight was released, the entire arm rotated with enough force to fling a five-hundred-pound stone up to five hundred feet. For comparison, this is ten times the weight of a missile fired from an onager (a classic catapult) and twice the range. The classic trebuchet was likely an Arabic or Persian weapon, attributed to Mardi ibn Ali al-Tarsusi in 1187, but it quickly gained traction across Europe and the Middle East until the advent of gunpowder in the 1500s.
