No man’s land – the zones between trenches on the battlefields of World War I – was hell on earth. Marred by the scars of artillery shells and tainted by poison gas, it was a space where anything that moved was a target. Tanks were still in their infancy and the landscape was too scarred for wheeled vehicles. Additionally, open zones were too deadly for foot soldiers. The byproduct was trench warfare, which involved digging in for extended periods, durations of latency interspersed by quick, deadly advances. This was the world of the trench fighter – infantry that specialized in creating semi-subterranean bunkers.
