Civilopedia entry[]
Education in the Assyrian Empire began early for children seeking to become scribes. Over the course of 12 years, boys and girls were rigorously trained in cuneiform script; they also studied topics ranging from history and religion to medicine and agriculture. This form of scribal scholarship – tupšarrūtu – was intensive and challenging for students. But once they graduated, they became highly sought after for their skills, eligible for any position that required literacy and education, including scribes, doctors, astronomers, musicians, and architects.
