Civilopedia entry[]
The Mongol Empire, or Yeke Mongyol Ulus, is inextricably connected with the rise of Temüjin, a noble of a nomad clan who fought, schemed, and negotiated his way to become the ruler of an association of Mongol tribes. He then led them to establish, via horse archers and cannons, the largest land empire in history. Genghis Khan, as he was later known, governed an incredibly diverse empire that held Chinese and Russians, Arabs and Persians, Turks and Burmese, all under the same banner.
After the empire broke up, ulus came to mean “horde,” a term that is a bit of a misnomer as it is taken from the Turkic word “orda,” which means “camp.”
