Civilopedia entry[]
As soon as humanity started making detailed paintings of flora, fauna, and gods on cave walls, places of higher learning existed. But universities – institutionalized sites devoted to higher study – emerged in the first millennia CE. The title of “the first university” is contested – Nalanda in India was a residential place of learning for religious and philosophical students and was founded in the fifth century CE, but the first degree-granting university in the world was Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco and, founded in the 9th century, is still in operation. The University of Bologna, the first university in Europe, started roughly two centuries later and also remains a bastion of higher learning. These institutes flourished in the Renaissance period in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean, and they are a backbone for the development of civic and scientific life today.
