Civilopedia entry[]

The Siamese uparat was a viceroy, second in command of the state and presumptive heir to the throne. The tradition has a long history. Imported from India, the position was first employed during the 15th century. When Prince Naresuan was appointed uparat by his father, the king built him a palace in front of his own; therefore the role of uparat has come to be called Wang Na (Front Palace). However, the role of uparat was commonly held by the king's brother, who functioned as the presumed heir (sometimes co-ruler) until the king bore a son.

In modern Siam, the position became more powerful, with uparats commanding their own military forces. In 1874-1875, tension between the king and the Front Palace escalated into a brief armed crisis that resulted in the abolition of the uparat position entirely. It was replaced by the role of Crown Prince.
