Civilopedia entry[]
Khmer society was built on the Indian model of statecraft, which was divided into four varnas (social classes): brahmins (scholars), kshatriyas (warriors and rulers), vaishyas (farmers and merchants), and shudras (artisans and workers). Starting at birth, this structure dictated a person’s path in life, and it aimed to preserve order through predetermined social responsibilities.
The vaishyas were responsible for maintaining ethical trade for the Khmer Empire, both internally and externally. Regional trade was focused along the Mekong River, and international commerce occurred up and down the coast with polities like India, Java, and China. While foreign trade was largely conducted by men, local stalls in Khmer marketplaces were mostly run by women.
