Civilopedia entry[]
The bow replaced the sling in many parts of the world but not in the Andes. Andean warak’aq – woolen slings braided in contrasting colors – were masterpieces, capable of flinging a stone with deadly force up to 130m away. Stones are more plentiful in the high places than in the woods where one might craft arrows.
Inca battles were both violent and symbolic. During tinku battles (show battles) warriors would re-enact famous conflicts from Inca history for an audience of nobles. Ethnic groups from around the empire would also dress in their particular ceremonial outfits, creating a drama that illustrated the scale and scope of the empire, as well as the Inca’s (inevitable) victory.
