The productive capabilities of the New World were a shock to many. By the tail end of the 1700s, colonies in the New World had become leaders in the production of cotton, rum, sugar, tobacco and gold. Philadelphia, Havana, Boston, New Amsterdam all were littered with warehouses built to protect the new wealth of the colonies.
