The largest animals ever to exist, whales are a constant source of wonder...and meat and oil. Whaling may seem daunting, but whale hunting, especially in the Pacific, has been traditionally practiced via small boats by determined hunters armed with harpoons. Early evidence for whaling has been seen in Korea, and whaling societies developed across Indonesia, indigenous North America, and Oceania. In the industrial age, whaling became a vast industry as fleets of ships, mostly from Europe, exploited the great beasts' oil for heat and lighting, using other whale parts for clothing and food. Not only did whaling become fuel for industrial and urban expansion in colonial centers, but it was also a vehicle for further colonial expansion – many island communities were targets for whaling depots as much as they were strategic military sites. Over time, overhunting and the growth of petroleum destroyed whaling’s viability. Today, whaling is practiced by Iceland, Norway, Japan, and indigenous communities across the Pacific.
