Civilopedia entry[]
When the Normans arrived on English shores in 1066, they encountered a diverse mix of Anglo-Saxons, Norse, and Celts, most of whom were fortified in strongholds protected by wooden palisades and elite foot soldiers such as the huscarl. In contrast, the Normans brought technologies from mainland Europe: mounted knights and towers of stone. Such fortifications became an important tool in keeping control over a recently conquered populace.
The Tower of London wasn’t originally made of stone. William the Conqueror first built the structure from wood, then used this temporary security to construct a fortification of stone (begun 12 years after the conquest). The oldest part of the complex, the White Tower, became all things at once: royal residence, military fortification, prison, and church. As England’s turmoil subsided, the structure became more luxurious, with stained glass and a whitewashed exterior. Royals eventually moved elsewhere, to more spacious palaces, but the Tower remains a symbol of British fortitude today.
Trivia[]
