Civilopedia entry[]
The early United States was split from its founding, with plantation-dependent, slaving societies to the south and independent farmers and tradesmen in the north (and, increasingly, a west composed of homesteaders pushing against indigenous polities). In the north, Yankee (a word referring specifically to New Englanders, not all Americans) descendants of religious refugees and new immigrants alike experimented with novel ways of being. Sociologist Max Weber described how Calvinist notions of salvation through labor transformed into a secular ethic of asceticism, accumulation, and constant re-investment in society and industry. This change led to a dynamic and innovative – but frugal and sometimes joyless – pursuit of capital. In the end, this society set a template for modern-day entrepreneurship and ingenuity.
