Civilopedia entry[]
Yassa was the legal code of the Mongolian Empire. No complete record of it remains, but excerpts are quoted by Ibn Battuta and others. As with other legal codes of its time, the Yassa extended beyond civic regulations to include religious and sacred prohibitions, such as the prohibition on washing clothes unnecessarily or during thunder (though that might also be a practical concern), and was thus carefully guarded by Mongolian nobility. The Yassa forbade the shedding of noble blood (in the literal sense – punishments often involved trampling by horses, while offending commoners, under no such restrictions, were just decapitated). The code also guaranteed religious freedom – a forward-thinking rule that was necessary for such a wide-ranging and diverse empire.
The Yassa also regulated soldiers' behavior. Generals were forbidden from making peace with enemies who had not surrendered, and from allowing their troops to pillage until the order had been given.
