Civilopedia entry[]
Aztec ceremonial centers were built around a central plaza, a city plan that Spanish conquerors emulated in the Zócalo of Mexico City, here generalized to refer to the central plaza of all Mexican cities. It remains the place where important civic functions happen. The buildings surrounding the Zócalo are testaments to their importance in Mexican society: the cathedral, the city hall, and the main halls of administration. This space once contained the principal temple of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, and the Zócalo’s orientation toward the cardinal directions is a key outgrowth of its Aztec plan. This is the continuity of empire – the re-creation of a new world resting on the bones of the old.
