Civilopedia entry[]

The Mughals ruled over a diverse population, in language, religion, caste, but also in administrative styles. In some regions, Mughal rulers took over princely states ruled by their own raja, in others, Mughal leaders appointed rulers to take charge of particular areas. These were all categorized by the Persian word “zamindar”, or estate-holder. While in practice zamindars formed a network of wealthy and well-connected local families, especially in North India, in theory many zamindars could be appointed and recalled at the behest of the Mughal state – a classic feature of bureaucratic monarchies. Zamindar rule was appropriated by the British Raj after the Mughals, and only dissolved in the middle of the 20th century. The families, though, remained influential as powerful local elites.
