Civilopedia entry[]
The Mitsubishi A6M was a light, maneuverable fighter aircraft. It was named the reisen or Zero after the imperial year of its manufacture (2600, or 1940 in the Gregorian calendar). Japan's demands for the Zero were extreme: it had to be small enough to fit onto a carrier, durable enough to fly for eight hours, armed well enough to pose a threat, and fast enough to be effective. Mitsubishi achieved this by incorporating new forms of aluminum and stripping the craft of everything that would weigh it down.
Thanks to its range and handling, it dominated the Pacific skies during the early part of World War II. Notably, the Zero could drop to speeds of 69 mph without stalling, giving it a tight turn radius in comparison to Allied craft of the time. However, as the war progressed, the Zero grew increasingly outdated and, by the end of the war, carried doomed kamikaze fighters into their last spiral.
