The Great Engineer has the ability to "Hurry Production," which instantly adds a vast number of Template:Production5 Production points to the current construction project in the city where he currently is. This is usually enough to finish all but the most massive wonders in just one turn. Note, however, that projects, such as the Manhattan Project or the Apollo Program, cannot be hurried with a Great Engineer.
Note that, in order to use 'Hurry production' the Engineer needs to be inside a city. So, you need to move him in the precise city where you want to build whatever it is you're trying to hurry.
The Manufactory tile improvement is also a long-term benefit for a specific city's production capabilities. One or two well-placed Manufactories can quickly turn cities into troop training centers or wonder production facilities.
There are many different ways to obtain "free" Great Engineers. Purchasing a Great Engineer with Template:Faith5 Faith does not push back the spawning pool (although it increases the amount of Template:Faith5 Faith for future Great Engineer purchases), whereas all the following do:
- Earning a free GP of your choice (with the Mayan Long Count, Liberty finisher, Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc.). Note that this also pushes back the Great Scientist and Great Merchant pools.
- Adopting Spaceflight Pioneers (in the Order tree). Pushes back the Great Engineer/Great Merchant/Great Scientist pool by 200 GPP.

The amount of production of a Great Engineer on Normal speed is calculated using the formula[1]
300 + (30 * city population)
So in a city with a Template:Population5 Population of 1 the Engineer only generates 330 Template:Production5 Production, while in a size 15 city it generates 750 Template:Production5 Production.
For Quick speed, the formula is
200 + (20 * city population)
For Epic speed it is
450 + (45 * city population)
and for Marathon speed it is
900 + (90 * city population)
